Windows 7 ad hoc network not visible

Additional info: I haven't received any error on both laptops. I have admin rights. I'm connected to the internet wire. We may misunderstand the ad-hoc feature ,it only supports the computer to computer.

Here is a link for reference :. To create a wifi and connect the phone ,we may need to take the steps according to the link I have posted in my third answer. It is used to create a virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter.

In the 1st link it says "An ad hoc network is a temporary connection between computers and devices used for a specific purpose". So it should not be only computers. Plus Iphone connects to it why not Windows phone? I only tried connecting my friends' Android devices for tesing purposes. My own phone is Windows. Please check whether the "Network discovery "has been turned on.

If there are antivirus software in the machines ,please turn off them temporarily to have a check. Off course it's listed and I already stated that I had followed everything you said earlier before you said it. What I meant mainly was this "Network discovery" thing. Laptop to laptop connection works fine with and without authentication. Everything works file up to the internet access on the laptop that connects through the other.

With authentication, they can detect the ad hoc network of the laptop, but somehow they fail to connect. My windows phone plus 4 other android phones cannot even detect the network to begin with!

Please check the Event Viewer for any errors related to this issue. It will be useful to troubleshoot the issue. If there are any antivirus software ,please turn them off temporarily to have a check. As an alternative choice ,we can use the command to setup the wireless ad host to have a check. Before we begin to setup it ,we should run " netsh wlan show drivers".

Notice the string "Hosted network supported". I know, I know, don't use open networks; but I'm just trying to get the darn thing working! I get a window saying my network is ready to use Also, there is a prompt at the bottom of the window which says, "Turn on Internet connection sharing" Which I clicked Even after all that, the network name I specified does not show up in the scans of any other devices.

Disable the Security Software for the time being and check if the connection can be established successfully. Note: Make sure to turn on or enable the Security Software once you are done with the test. In the search box, type adapter, and then, under Network and Sharing Center , click View network connections. Right-click the connection that you want to share, and then click Properties. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Note: The Sharing tab won't be available if you have only one network connection. After you've followed the steps above to set up ICS on the host computer, make the following changes on all of the other computers but not on the host computer.

Click the Connections tab, and then click Never dial a connection. However, if your Wireless is on, you should be able to get to it from the screen you were on - If it isn't there, it is possible you have some sort of other error. Improve this answer. Additionally, I can find other computers when I activate "Network identification," so I would assume that the card is turned on. Nvidia nForce Networking afaik is not wireless.

Go to command prompt and type ipconfig and look at device name or click start and type "network connections" take a look at how many interfaces you have and see if any of them say wireless. Add a comment. On the left side of the window, click "Mobile hotspot". Slide the switch to the on position. Change the network name and password to what ever you want.

From your description, it appears this does not refer to ad-hoc networks. DanielB Is there a difference between an ad-hoc network and a hotspot? Yes, very much so. Hotspots are access points. They run in infrastructure mode while ad-hoc is, well, ad-hoc. That wasn't helpful. An ad hoc network creates a WiFi signal so that other devices can connect to the internet. So does a hotspot.

To me they seem like they are the same. Am I missing something. One is a mesh network, the other is a star network with the access point at its center. The OP in this question asked about ad-hoc networking. To help others, not all wireless adapters can host a connection.

If you see no, you're out of luck. DougN DougN 2 2 silver badges 7 7 bronze badges.
